Gravel Hill Gardens is a community garden established by The Salvation Army in 2000 on what was formerly a primary school playing field close to the centre of Bendigo. It is now one of the best known community gardens in Australia. It was designed, and is maintained, with permaculture principles to the fore and serves as an excellent demonstration site for showcasing permaculture and urban food production.
Gravel Hill Gardens runs a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme and is a part of various Salvation Army community service programs. It serves as a contact point for locals interested in permaculture and sustainable farming, and provides an interesting, educational and inspiring experience for visitors.
